Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why are you making these?
When Winston was in for his first open heart surgery (just shy of 3 months old) and recovering in Cardiac Intensive Care, we had a neighbour who was much younger than he was and was mostly alone for the day. I peeked inside and saw banners and photos of all the people who loved her. It is so important for these heart warriors to know they’re loved. I wanted to spread the happiness with other heart families.
  • Are these coming from your own pocket?
The basics of the box either come from our family or donations from wonderful friends, families and strangers. The basics in the box include: plates, cups, cutlery, tissue paper, streamers, balloons. We’ve had many businesses and personal donations to add gifts and other items to the boxes and also sponsor shipping costs.
  • What items are needed for the boxes?
The age range for recipients have been 3 months to 17 years of age. I love to keep things educational or functional but just imagine what a kid would like to get for a birthday and that’s what we’re looking for!
  • How can I donate?
Thank you for wanting to support this initiative! There are a couple ways to donate: GIFTS: You can gift items for the Heart Boxes – please get in touch or we have started a couple wish lists to help us continue on - check out our DONATIONS page for the links. MONETARY DONATIONS: You can donate money towards the gifts or cost of the box. You can get in touch with me to e-transfer or you can donate on our GoFundMe page (see the DONATIONS page for links).
  • How much does it cost to create a box?
It costs typically $30-40 per box (not including shipping). The gifts are usually the most costly part of the box.
  • Can I sponsor a box?
Yes! You can leave a custom message for the recipient as well. We've had some generous donors who have sponsored bundles of boxes as well - like our CICU Christmas Boxes!
